AI FOR HR NEWS
When AI Fails, HR Pays the Price
This week’s roundup of AI news highlights what a façade artificial intelligence continues to be for the office, especially when it comes to HR and talent management. From Taco Bell’s woes with using AI to take voice orders, to Meta’s partnerships and policy challenges, AI’s expansion continues, sometimes bumpy. At the same time, enterprise talent and recruiting trends continue to shift rapidly, with new tools, acquisitions and strategies emerging daily.
Taco Bell’s AI Voice Ordering Has a Few Glitches
Taco Bell introduced an AI-powered voice-ordering system at more than 500 drive-thrus, envisioning a smoother customer experience and faster order-taking. But initial rollout has revealed some potential snags. The AI assistants have had a very hard time correctly interpreting and completing orders, resulting in embarrassing and often viral outcomes—including one person ordering 18,000 cups of water in an attempt to get through the AI to a human.
This is more than a customer service failure; it is a warning sign for the most fundamental of AI adoption risks that HR leaders and executives should be aware of:
User acceptance and trust: Employees and customers may reject or avoid AI interactions en masse if the technology is not reliable, making adoption and usage harder.
Training and monitoring: The AI system demands continuous refinement and supervision. HR departments will have to make sure employees are enabled to step in, troubleshoot, and responsibly guide the evolution of AI tools.
Communication and policy: Taco Bell’s ordeal underscores the importance of establishing policies on the use of AI and its limits, and that is something for HR to work through to help translate the gap from AI potential to practical use.
For HR, this is an increasingly relevant story about the human dimension of integrating AI: technology alone doesn’t determine success, it’s dependent on trust, training, and people’s willingness to adopt new processes.
